Energy from Waste (EfW) is a broad term which covers an increasing number of technologies processing and an ever-wider spectrum of waste product.

As a tightly regulated area it drives ever increasing standards, not only for plant performance but also the measurement accuracy and range of components that are monitored.

EfW can range from small scale (Sub 3tph) waste biomass plants (SWIP) to large municipal waste plants processing tens of tonnes per hour. Conventionally such plants have been used to generate steam / electricity and heat. Advanced thermal processing techniques are also being pursued to generate Syngas and liquid fuels.

Whatever the EfW process, it is likely that a CEM system will be required.

Typically, what system would we recommend for use in the EfW sector?

The CEMs market is mature and there are a good selection of products available.

The MCA10 is our core analyser for the EfW sector. It has some of the lowest available ranges and uncertainties and is the technical and reliability performance equal of any available alternative system.

Additionally, the MCA10 should be noted for:

  • 6 monthly maintenance intervals on all components – including TOC
  • Integrated manifold enabling expansion / addition of further systems should they be required in the future

What are the recent and impending changes in this sector?

The most recent changes, include those introduced by the BAT / BREF – lowering ELV’s for all existing and new plants.

EA guidance is also requesting CO2 and N2O components to be added to QAL 2 and QAL 3 routines. This is a request at the moment but we expect this to become a mandatory requirement in the future.

Flow is now also required to be included as part of the QAL 2 testing.

Further to this, continuous Mercury and Dioxin measurements may be required for some plants!
