What are infrared gas detectors?

Infrared sensors are gas detection devices that use infrared light absorption to measure the concentration of gases in the air. They are commonly used for detecting hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide in industrial and environmental applications.

How does the technology work?

Advantages of infrared gas sensors

  • High Accuracy: Excellent for hydrocarbons and CO₂ detection.
  • Resistant to Poisoning: Unlike catalytic sensors, IR sensors are not affected by contaminants.

Disadvantages of infrared gas sensors

  • Limited Gas Range: Cannot detect gases that do not absorb IR light (e.g., hydrogen).
  • Higher Cost: More expensive than electrochemical or catalytic sensors.
  • Dust & Dirt Sensitivity: Requires clean optics for reliable performance.
  • Size & Power: Larger and more power-hungry than some alternatives.
