As with the Incineration Sector, Combustion has also seen the tightening of Emission Limit Values (ELVs) over the past few years, most notably for NOX. As a large number of existing plants are 20 or even 30+ years old, they have experienced quite significant legislation changes. Many plants will be required to implement additional measures (e.g. SCR or SNCR) to comply with the lower limits. Consequently, further components may also require monitoring such as NH3 (Ammonia slip).
The combination of these legislative changes, and the evolution of the plant has an impact on their legacy CEM systems. Monitoring equipment installed on Combustion Processes may have previously been adapted (multiple times) to satisfy contemporary requirements. Invariably this can lead to overly complex systems with additional ancillary components and multiple paths of failure. Design drawings are often not updated, redundant equipment not removed and when failures do occur, fault-finding can become a significant headache, as can sourcing obsolete components. Essentially, the system that was originally installed almost certainly does not provide the best available solution and, in some cases, may no longer be suitable for the application it’s monitoring.
Whatever the process, it is likely that a measuring system will be required.
- If a plant falls into the realms of Large Combustion (i.e. > 50Mw Thermal) it will require continuous monitors.
- The measurements will vary according to the fuel used, but NOx will typically be a component that is consistently monitored closely.
Typically, what system would we recommend for use in the Combustion Processes sector?
We have a proven core range of products that are well suited to the Power Generation / Combustion Processes sector. With its class leading (HW NDIR) low-certified NOx range the MCA10 can be applied to all but the lowest NOX ELVs.
The key benefit of a system which utilises the MCA10 is in its efficient design. By offering a Hot Wet NDIR analyser we avoid all gas conditioning equipment.
This means, no chillers, condensate traps, peristaltic pumps or moisture sensors. Furthermore, the system uses an air injector, so there is no mechanical pump!
Fully automated QAL3’s can be configured by the analyser HMI – no separate controller is required.
Service intervals are six-monthly or more frequently if required.
The FMD 09 provides a combined Flow / Pressure and Temperature measurement from a single device. The flow is calculated using a ubiquitous differential pressure technology that is very well proven. The design of the device offers service friendly construction and multiple options to suit a very wide range of processes.
