The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) defines processes based on the fuels that they use. In broad terms, these are split into two categories, Non-Waste Derived Fuel (Combustion) and Waste Derived Fuel (Incineration).
The Combustion (specifically, Power Generation) sector landscape has changed dramatically in recent times. Even within the past decade, we have witnessed all but the complete demise of Coal-fired powered plants. Currently we are seeing Coal-fired plants converting to Biomass; Gas Turbines changing operating modes to provide greater flexibility and we are starting to see Carbon Capture aspirations in the political and legislative environment, driving the technologies forward into large scale ambitious developments.

How can we help support applications in this sector?

We have numerous installations on combustion plants, including Coal, Gas, Biomass and HFO boilers as well as Gas Turbines.

We have a proven and reliable system for the Combustion sector that utilises our experience to provide a demonstrable straightforward and reliable solution. Often, continuous monitoring systems for combustion processes have pumps, chillers, converters, drains, valves, flow gauges etc. Our solution for Combustion Processes does away with all of that, reducing the amount of possible pain/problem points within the whole system.

By utilising a heated analyser with an ejector pump, the sample system is as simple as it can possibly be, reducing maintenance requirements and all but eliminating consumable spares. The additional benefit is that the lack of complexity enables operators to have far greater ownership and control over the system than they would often be comfortable with. Full training is offered as an option for operators so that day-to-day functions can be carried out in-house.

Remote support is available by connection directly to the analyser (where site networks permit). This facilitates:

  • Routine performance check
  • QAL3 Validation
  • Operator support / training
  • Report generation (e.g. for QAL2)
  • Pre and Post service visit interrogation
  • Fault Diagnosis
  • Commissioning

As with the Incineration Sector, Combustion has also seen the tightening of Emission Limit Values (ELVs) over the past few years, most notably for NOX. As a large number of existing plants are 20 or even 30+ years old, they have experienced quite significant legislation changes. Many plants will be required to implement additional measures (e.g. SCR or SNCR) to comply with the lower limits. Consequently, further components may also require monitoring such as NH3 (Ammonia slip).

The combination of these legislative changes, and the evolution of the plant has an impact on their legacy CEM systems. Monitoring equipment installed on Combustion Processes may have previously been adapted (multiple times) to satisfy contemporary requirements. Invariably this can lead to overly complex systems with additional ancillary components and multiple paths of failure. Design drawings are often not updated, redundant equipment not removed and when failures do occur, fault-finding can become a significant headache, as can sourcing obsolete components. Essentially, the system that was originally installed almost certainly does not provide the best available solution and, in some cases, may no longer be suitable for the application it’s monitoring.

Whatever the process, it is likely that a measuring system will be required.

  • If a plant falls into the realms of Large Combustion (i.e. > 50Mw Thermal) it will require continuous monitors.
  • The measurements will vary according to the fuel used, but NOx will typically be a component that is consistently monitored closely.

Typically, what system would we recommend for use in the Combustion Processes sector?

We have a proven core range of products that are well suited to the Power Generation / Combustion Processes sector. With its class leading (HW NDIR) low-certified NOx range the MCA10 can be applied to all but the lowest NOX ELVs.

The key benefit of a system which utilises the MCA10 is in its efficient design. By offering a Hot Wet NDIR analyser we avoid all gas conditioning equipment.

This means, no chillers, condensate traps, peristaltic pumps or moisture sensors. Furthermore, the system uses an air injector, so there is no mechanical pump!

Fully automated QAL3’s can be configured by the analyser HMI – no separate controller is required.

Service intervals are six-monthly or more frequently if required.

The FMD 09 provides a combined Flow / Pressure and Temperature measurement from a single device. The flow is calculated using a ubiquitous differential pressure technology that is very well proven. The design of the device offers service friendly construction and multiple options to suit a very wide range of processes.

DAHS – having accurate and reliable measurements is critical but the access to and visibility of this data is also crucial. We use the CEMsuite range of products which offer an unparalleled level of flexibility alongside the highest level of support. This provides a great compliment to the measurement technologies.
