It was back to school for our Install Engineer Sam Skellern and Development Engineer Josh Walker, participating in Holbrook School for Autism’s Careers Week earlier this month.
Josh and Sam were working with students in the ‘Futures’ class. They passed around a range of electrical components, offering some ideas about what they thought they might be and what their function might be in an electrical system. They were interested to know which the most harmful gases were that our engineers come into contact with and how the condensed sample gas is collected after the peristaltic pump has pulled it out of a CEM system.
Then both Sam and Josh talked further with the students, who were aged between 16 and 17 and are currently considering what their next steps might be as they look to leave school..
They spoke about their own educational and vocational routes to their current positions and answered questions from the students themselves about both apprenticeships and on-the-job training.

“The students really enjoyed the session and amazed us with some of their responses to the equipment task. They had a great insight into engineering and what’s involved.”
I think it’s fair to say that there was a degree of trepidation from both Sam and Josh prior to participating in the session – it’s surprising how scary it can be to stand in front of a room full of teenagers – however they came back having thoroughly enjoyed the experience themselves!
