CEM Solutions were proud to be exhibiting at the 2022 Energy from Waste conference held at County Hall, Southbank, London. It was great to meet face to face again after last year’s virtual event.
It is a very interesting time in the Energy from Waste sector! The industry faces many challenges and changes as we head towards net zero in 2050.
The EfW conference is an important industry event for senior decision makers in the UK and Europe, bringing together policy makers, investors, financiers, equipment suppliers, project developers and waste to energy management.

The role of CCUS in the Net Zero Strategy and opportunities for EfW with CCUS.
Carbon capture, usage and storage was the leading topic for the conference this year. CCUS is critical for the UK to be net zero by 2050. Leading figures in the waste to industry sector have worked very hard to highlight the important role of the EfW sector and to ensure EfW plants are included in the Track 1 clusters.
Track 1 clusters are the first localised networks that brings together multiple carbon dioxide (CO2) emitters and storage locations using shared transportation infrastructure. Track 1 clusters are Hynet, covering NW England and North Wales and the East Coast Clusters which covers the Hull estuary area. The aim is to be operational by the mid-2020’s.

Lord Callanan, Government Minister for Business, Energy and Corporate Responsibility discussed the government’s position on CCUS, and was passionate on the importance increasing the UK’s heat networks (district heating). This will play a big role in reducing carbon emissions as well as cutting energy bills for customers. This is an area where EfW plants can play a vital role.
On both days of the conference there were interesting and lively debates on policy, funding and investment frameworks, selection of feedstocks and the future of this sector from experts within the industry.
