We’d like to introduce you to Alastair, our Technical Project Consultant. Day to day Alastair works in our Projects department and is closely involved with CEM system design & development. With his vast experience, he is widely considered the ‘go-to’ with queries on all electrical & mechanical matters!
What your role involves and what you enjoy about it the most and/or what’s most difficult about it?
I’m generally responsible for designing and drawing the electrical schematics and mechanical arrangements for new projects. This means liaising with our sales and production departments, ensuring we build what the customer has ordered.
I enjoy the challenge, as no two jobs are the same. I use 2D and 3D CAD programs, electrical schematic software, and PLC programming software. A far cry from where I began my career, as a radar design engineer for Marconi, subsequently designing a stabilised radar platform for the Royal Navy, which involved going on sea trials aboard HMS Penelope.
This led to involvement with the original ‘Heli-Tele’ – a gyro stabilised TV platform for Belgian police helicopters – now used extensively throughout the world.
What do you get up to in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy a weekly session of table tennis, am an avid reader (mostly novels) and sing in a local 50 strong choir, bass section. We have just had our Christmas Concerts, always the highlight of our choral year, although rehearsing carols in September never feels quite appropriate!
