Operational Optimisation 2025

This year’s conference was very interesting. The talks began with a look at the latest UK ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) policy and MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification) in the implementation period, which is due to start on the 1st of January 2026. Many EFW plants are in discussions with the EA on how exactly this will work.

Regulatory priorities for emissions control, including NOx reduction and PAC management, by Ben Freeman from the Environment Agency covered the potential for further NOx reduction with current SNCR on existing plants and how lower ELV’s can be implemented in the future.

Health & safety during plant shutdowns was another topic. It was interesting to learn how much goes on behind the scenes when bringing together many contractors in a very short space of time, whilst keeping everyone safe!

The Operators Panel featured discussion from industry leaders on what challenges they and the industry are facing. These include the planning and managing of shutdowns, maintaining health and safety, staff training and retention and how ETS may change things going forward.
