With the CBCE (Cremation & Burial Communication & Education) conference 2024 only 4 weeks away, we have begun preparing for the event. CEM Solutions (UK) Ltd are exhibiting for the second consecutive year and looking forward to speaking with other crematoria equipment suppliers, local authorities and operators.
We will be showcasing our crematorium emissions monitoring solution which has been specifically designed with the anticipated changes to PG5/2 in mind. This covers the option of a continuous NOx measurement alongside CO & O2 and a twin stream CO & O2 version including data collection & reporting, ideal for simultaneous monitoring of two cremators using a single analyser in one high quality, compact package.
It will be interesting to revisit last year’s topics and see how these have moved on over the last 12 months. Are installations of electric cremators still on the rise and are the environmental benefits of this technology being seen? Have opinions changed with regards to Net Zero and what changes will need to be made to reach it? I’m sure the use of plastics and the reduction of direct carbon emissions will be high on the agenda!

Net Zero
At the CBCE conference, Stephen Byfield from Horizon Cremation discussed just how difficult it will be to get to Net Zero carbon emissions, specifically when considering all the sources of carbon: from the building itself to the transport of visitors as well as the plastics used in displays. A key element to reducing carbon emissions is to accurately measure the emissions, which can be more difficult than it appears to be! Once emissions are measured, they can be impact assessed and comparison with data from other sites and other industries can be made.
Electric Cremators
Lee Snashfold gave a very interesting talk on the history and evolution of electric cremators during CBCE. Surprisingly these have been around for a very long time, with the earliest examples being installed in the 1930s. The fortunes of electric cremators have waxed and waned over the years, but recent developments and environmental pressures mean this technology may become increasingly widespread over the coming years.
