In 2014, a flagship Energy from Waste site was commissioned in SW England. The chosen supplier for their Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and raw gas measurements was Dr Foedisch with CEM Solutions providing installation support and commissioning services.
The System
The site’s CEMS comprise of two Dr. Foedisch HW NDIR MCA10 analysers (Duty and Standby), which incorporate FID analysers to measure TOCs, accompanied by DR-800 and FL150 devices for dust and flow measurements. A further MCA10 is utilised for raw gas measurement on the boiler, combining two separate heated sample lines and probes to ensure representative measurement across the boiler. The system’s touchscreen interface also display two O2 readings, obtained from a pair of Dr. Foedisch OMD14 analysers, which accurately measure oxygen levels within the boiler.

On-going Service
CEM Solutions attend the site at scheduled intervals to conduct routine maintenance on these systems to ensure their record of reliability is upheld and have done since 2014. This long-standing relationship and the performance of the equipment demonstrates both customer satisfaction and competence of service staff. The maintenance program consists of standard and extended routine visits. The combination of these ensures the equipment is serviced with adequate frequency to ensure reliability and sufficient interrogation to comply with the certificate requirements.
Following each visit to the site, or each remote connection, we compile and submit a thorough work report to the site contact. This detailed report contains all the essential diagnostics, calibration data, and any additional comments or recommendations deemed necessary.
In addition to offering on-site support, we also offer 24/7 phone assistance for our customers. Incorporating the MCA10’s remote access capabilities, we can swiftly identify and resolve issues with the CEMS, Raw Gas or QAL3s from a distance, minimising the need for visits to site.
Functional Testing
Furthermore, we conduct rigorous functional tests, including linearity calibration checks at multiple points (typically 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% & 100%) for each gaseous component and H2O, thereby scrutinising accurate calibrations between and beyond the standard zero and 100% span points. Where possible, we strategically schedule the extended maintenance, so it falls no more than five weeks prior to the site’s Annual Stack Test (AST), eliminating the need for the stack testing company to duplicate functional and linearity tests.
Upgrades driven by Legislative Changes
Over the course of nearly 10 years, our commitment to providing a high-quality service has always driven us to embrace opportunities for improvement and upgrades, whether it involves enhancing the overall system performance or adhering to new permit regulations.
A recent example of this commitment occurred when the site expressed their desire to incorporate N2O (to comply with the EA request to do so across the sector) into their CEMS analysers. To ensure continuous operation on both a duty and redundant system, we supplied a loan instrument device, enabling the analysers to be upgraded without any impact to the security of measurement.
Long-standing Service/Site Relationships
Our commitment to exceptional service extends far beyond the scope of on-site work. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile, offering unwavering support for QAL2s/ASTs and QAL3s, providing reliable management of site calibration gas and spare parts and always being readily available to provide advice or information on any aspect our customers may seek guidance on.
