Continuous Emissions Monitoring of carbon monoxide, oxygen, temperature and particulate matter is a requirement for all UK crematoria according to the Statutory Guidance PG5/2 (12). CEM Solutions has experience over many years providing routine maintenance services on CEM systems within the crematoria sector.
Compiling our extensive knowledge, we have developed a bespoke CEM system designed to not only meet but exceed the monitoring requirements. We have devised a compact package with an MCERTS approved multi-gas analyser. Both the analyser and the class-leading gas conditioning equipment are integrated into an innovative enclosure which saves space, whilst allowing easy access for maintenance and operation.
The system’s compact wall mount design gives optimum access to the analyser and gas conditioning equipment, allowing easy access for maintenance activities. The analyser screen provides operators with live measurements and system status messages.

CGA12 Trial Case Study – Large crematorium in the East Midlands – 3-month trial from 10/8/23
In order to field-test the CGA12 we partnered with a local crematorium. Our objectives were to ensure that the system performed without fault between maintenance intervals and that it would function as a turnkey stand-alone system complete with integrated reporting function to satisfy permit requirements. Although this particular crematorium was modern and relatively spacious, we know that this is not always the case and chose to situate the CGA12 panel adjacent to the Cremator in order to simulate elevated ambient temperature conditions that may be unavoidable on other plants.
For the purpose of the site trial, the system was installed on a mobile platform to allow it to be suitably located and re-sited if required.
The CEMWare data logging system was installed inside the mobile platform. This DAHS generates compliance reports for the Local Authority as well as displaying trends and providing diagnostic data. Furthermore, our engineers could ‘dial-into’ site via a remote access connection to access the live and stored data, check on alarms and warnings and analyse the overall CEM system status throughout the trial.
The Findings
The CGA12 was in continuous use over a 3-month period which allowed us to compile data across this time-period with no issues or down-time.
In this instance the CGA12 system was installed alongside an existing CO/O2 analyser. During the trial, the crematorium’s existing CO/O2 analyser failed which meant that the CGA12’s presence was fortuitous as it provided continuity of measurement during this period.
Conclusion
The trial in some respects was a formality. Our confidence was high that the system would be well up to the challenge of the application. We however thought it was very important to prove the functionality, reliability and ease of use for operators of the device and we were incredibly pleased with the feedback received.
Additionally, the data and operating regimes enabled us to further develop and adapt our CEMWare DAHS system to suit the operating profile of a crematorium.
Remote connection / visibility, application specific DAHS and CEMS packaged specifically to meet the demands of a Cremator are, we believe, a strong offering we bring to this market.
Maintenance/Service Capability
In early 2022 we were approached by a leading Crematorium operator to carry out biannual routine service and maintenance on the Continuous Emissions Monitoring analyser and instruments across all of their sites throughout the length and breadth of the UK.
Our customer’s Maintenance Contract involves the service and calibration of both process and emissions monitoring analysers for CO, O2 and Particulates. Our inclusive service provides consumables, spares packages and calibration gas.
We can offer a call-out package, including 3-day response to a call-out for failures or issues.
We also offer an in-house repair service – it is possible to arrange for probes or analysers to be collected, assessed on our test rig, repaired and then sent back to site.
