This customer was finding reporting obligations challenging due to unreliable equipment on the dust extraction plant from the galvanising baths. Frequent problems due to numerous PCB failures and a slow service response led to extended downtime and costly repairs but, more importantly, prolonged periods of missing reportable emissions data.
Upon inspection of the customer’s operating permit, it was also deemed that the device should be replaced with an Mcerts approved instrument.
Permit Wording:
“Emissions from the abatement plant serving the galvanizing baths shall be continuously monitored and continuously recorded for particulate emissions using a suitable MCERTS accredited device”.
Unlike other manufacturers that may be tied to use of a particular product or supplier, CEM Solutions (UK) Ltd are independent and have access to a wide range of instrumentation. We can propose the right solution for the application in line with environmental operating permit requirements.
For our customer in the Midlands the MCERTS certified PFM20 from Dr Foedisch was proposed. Meeting both legislative and application requirements, it proved to be the perfect fit.
To meet the reporting aspects of the permit, CEMWare, our industry proven data handling and reporting package, was included in the offer. This led to further discussion on the sites reporting responsibilities and how maintenance staff were not comfortable with the burden of producing monthly reports for the local authority.
Like maintenance staff, it is common for Health & Safety or Quality teams to take on the responsibility of Environmental activities. Producing reports from infrequently used software packages can often be a daunting task.

The stand-alone CEMWare data collection & reporting panel with intuitive app-based menus, large touch screen display and local beacon for ELV exceedance alarms can easily be connected to the CEMWare365 remote access portal , allowing our Service engineers to perform weekly connection checks, monthly system health checks and remotely produce detailed emissions reports that can be delivered directly to your inbox.
Upon seeing the benefits of the CEMWare365 portal and off-site support functions available, the customer ordered the hardware and included a yearly maintenance contract with a fully comprehensive remote reporting package.
Installed and commissioned in November 2024, the hardware has run for 3 months without cause for concern, with monthly reports issued to the maintenance department manager for simple forwarding to the local authority representative when asked.
Allowing the maintenance team to do what maintenance teams do best… keep the plant going!
The site HSQE Manager had this to say:
“I contacted James at CEM to look at a reliable replacement for an existing dust monitoring system. James conducted a thorough survey of our requirements (as per our IPPC licence) and also discussed the options for remote monitoring and reporting. Once we had agreed the specification, the replacement was fitted professionally and tidily by one of the team. Connectivity was confirmed at start up and initial reports were reviewed, and feedback attended to with regards to honing the content. The remote connection even offers future benefits when calibration is next due, so very happy with the products and service”.
